Why Healthy Gums Are So Important

Healthy gums are essential for whole-body wellness. As the "gateway to the body," what's happening in your mouth can be a clue to other diseases and conditions. We are here to provide solutions whether you have early-stage gum disease or advanced periodontal disease.

Better Breath

Chronic bad breath can indicate gum disease and may isolate you in personal and social situations.

Healthier Body

Gum disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory issues are all linked.

Smile Health

Avoid unnecessary tooth loss by keeping your gums healthy. Losing teeth is more costly and invasive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria that live on your teeth, especially near the gum line. Healthy gums create a small pocket around each tooth, and in a person with healthy gums, this pocket is shallow. However, when harmful bacteria build up on the teeth, the pocket becomes deeper, causing the gum tissue to become inflamed. This inflammation can make your gums appear red, swollen, and they may bleed, especially when you brush or floss. It’s your body’s natural response to fight off the infection, similar to how your body reacts to a splinter under the skin.

If left untreated, gum disease can progress and lead to more serious problems, such as bone loss and loosening of the teeth. In severe cases, it may even result in tooth loss.

The good news is that gum disease is both preventable and treatable, especially if caught early. At Natural Smiles Family Dentistry in Lowell, MA, we perform regular gum health exams to detect the early signs of gum disease. If you do have gum disease, we offer effective treatments to help restore your oral health and prevent further complications.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of gum disease, such as persistent bad breath, bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, loose teeth, or gum pain, don’t wait—contact our office today. Dr. Luz and our team are here to help you keep your gums healthy and your smile beautiful.

How We Treat Gum Disease

At Natural Smiles Family Dentistry, we use the Cavitron ultrasonic scaler to provide deep cleanings. This advanced tool uses high-frequency sound waves and a gentle flow of water to remove hardened plaque and bacteria from your teeth. The Cavitron is effective and gentle, ensuring that you receive a thorough cleaning without discomfort. For the best results, we combine ultrasonic scaling with traditional hand scaling techniques to ensure all areas of your mouth are cleaned effectively.

If left untreated, calculus beneath the gumline can lead to a variety of serious issues, including inflammation, bad breath, gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. That's why it's so important to address gum disease early on. The sooner it is treated, the better the outcome for your oral health. Gum disease can also affect your overall health, as studies show a link between periodontal disease and systemic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Regular cleanings help to remove harmful bacteria and reduce the risk of these complications.

Teeth Cleanings for Advanced Gum Disease

For patients with more advanced gum disease, we may recommend a deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing(SRP). This procedure goes beyond a standard cleaning by thoroughly cleaning the surfaces of the roots beneath the gums. Scaling removes the plaque and calculus from the tooth surface, while root planing smooths out the rough areas of the tooth root, making it harder for bacteria to accumulate. This is a crucial step in preventing further gum damage, and it can help reverse the effects of early gum disease.
