Annual oral cancer screening performed by a trained professional is essential for overall health. Cancer in the oral cavity can spread quickly to other parts of the body but is curable if caught early.
- There are approximately 58,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed per year
- Oral cancer is most commonly found on the tongue and in the back of the mouth
- The average age of diagnosis is 64, and only 20% of new oral cancer diagnoses are on those under 55
- It is twice as common in men
- Smoking, alcohol consumption, and a history of HPV are all risk factors for developing oral cancer
Customized Oral Health Education
Patient education is a pillar of our practice. We want to work with you to craft a unique plan that fits your oral health needs. We want you to understand the “why.” During your visit, you can expect an in-depth review of treatment recommendations, dedicated time to answer any questions, and ways to maintain your natural smile at home in between office visits.
Fissure Sealants
Sealant placement is a minimally invasive procedure that protects deep pits and grooves on back teeth from decay. The treated surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned, etched (for maximum adhesion), and sealed with a light-cured composite resin during the procedure. A properly placed sealant can last many years and prevent decay, requiring more expensive treatment. Sealants can be placed in both children and adults.
Custom Nightguards
Do you wake up with a sore jaw or sensitive or worn-down teeth? If you notice cracks in your teeth or experience frequent headaches, a night guard may be the solution. Many people grind or clench their teeth, often unconsciously, during sleep. This condition, known as bruxism, can cause significant damage to teeth over time, leading to cracks, chips, and premature wear. Additionally, it can strain jaw muscles and contribute to jaw pain or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.
At Natural Smiles Family Dentistry, we offer custom night guards that provide a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth while you sleep. Night guards help prevent further tooth damage, reduce jaw discomfort, and alleviate the symptoms associated with bruxism. By wearing a night guard, you can protect your smile and improve your overall oral health, ensuring long-term comfort and function.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a natural mineral that plays a crucial role in protecting and strengthening teeth. It helps to remineralize tooth enamel, making it more resistant to the harmful effects of bacteria that cause tooth decay. For patients at a higher risk of tooth decay, fluoride treatments can provide an added layer of protection. This is especially important for children, individuals with dry mouths, or those with a history of frequent cavities.
At Natural Smiles Family Dentistry, we recommend fluoride treatments during routine cleaning visits for patients who are at increased risk for decay. The application is quick and painless, allowing us to deliver a concentrated dose of fluoride directly to your teeth for optimal protection. Regular fluoride treatments and good oral hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of cavities and help maintain long-term oral health.
